Biography - Evan Conaway

Evan has always been interested in other cultures and diversity among humans. When he was younger, he didn’t like to “play house”; he would go out in the backyard with his metal detector and “play anthropologist” or ask his brother to teach him words and “play school” (which is actually where he first learned to write his name). He has been studying Spanish for 8 years, so Latin American and Caribbean cultures have been somewhat of a passion of his for a while. He has already visited Spain and Mexico, so this is his third opportunity to explore a country outside of the United States. He decided to apply to work for Kalu Yala because he recently took a class called Herbs, Spices, and Medicinal Plants at the University of Georgia which made him highly interested in ethnobotany, the study of the connection between culture and plants. He plans to study the medicinal and cultural significance of plants in the San Miguel area, as well as in the nearby valley where Kalu Yala will one day be. He hopes his findings will contribute to the development of the economy and mutual cultural respect between the San Miguel community and the future Kalu Yala inhabitants.
