Team Gunga Galunga has had the exciting task this summer of researching vital information that will help integrate Kalu Yala’s organic farming system into the local Panamanian economy. After countless weeks on the computer, Abraham and I have found that a lot of the statistical data needed to complete our report can’t be found on the internet. Unlike the USDA, most economic information pertaining to agriculture in Panama, although public information, is not accessible unless requested. Therefore we have had to personally tap into local government institutions that are directly involved in agriculture.

One of our most promising government institutions in collecting quality research has been MIDA, the Ministry of Agriculture Development. MIDA has been extremely helpful in providing us with year by year statistical analysis on every product produced in Panama. Whether it is production numbers, financial figures on each product, or laws and regulations pertaining to farming, MIDA has pages of helpful information that most people are unaware even existed.

Reading through all the information we have received has been overwhelming but very informative. We are hoping to narrow down the information we have collected to fit the needs of Kalu Yala’s farming system.

All you need is some patience, a zip drive, and some good ‘ole Panamanian flirting skills and the possibilities are endless.
