Since coming to Panama I’ve been thinking a lot about technology and developed countries. It’s funny that the areas around the world that we consider to be “advanced” are the ones with the most technology. While there are a lot of great things about technology, being in the Valley has really made me question what we lose by using so much technology, I honestly think that we lose our sense of community. Living in America, it’s hard to get away from technology, everyone is constantly on their phones, computers, or listening to their iPods. In the Valley there is no technology, instead we occupy our time with each other’s company. I think that strong communities and good relationships are becoming more and more rare in the developed world and that directly correlates to the amount of technology.
One of the reasons why I love being in the Valley so much is because I can get away from all the phone calls, text messages, and Facebook. Without technology it’s so much easier to have a deep connection with nature and the people around – that’s why after only two weeks of knowing the Valley crew, it seems as though we have all known each other for years.
