Everybody keeps asking what exactly am I doing down here in Panama…”What is Kalu Yala?” Well, this blog here should pretty much sum it up. I’ve already said it’s all about changing your mindframe, but it’s really about changing the world, one mind at a time. Come with me, and check this concept out… .
Spending time in the city with the CEO, who now heads and directs the Business Program, I’ve come across the opportunity to not only preview the immersion and creation of a culture, but now the building of a brand…
LITERALLY, from the ground UP.
Kalu Yala is not just a real estate land development company, but an organization with many facets and majorly concerned with kick-starting a culture in order to build a community based on a sustainable way of living.
Commonly, when people ponder sustainability, they consider green living, recycling, etc, etc. The ideal of Kalu Yala is to utilize these ideas and concepts, but to integrate true sustainable LIVING. That is, a number of integrated communities, linked and complimentary and all working together in harmony to create sustainability in the sense that everything needs and works and benefits off of each other, and thus grows larger and never fails.
When you think of Kalu Yala, one should imagine a space where, like-minded retirees, entrepreneurs, vacationers, working class and local artisians can all live safely and conveniently. Riding one’s bike from the house to the store to the lake or community plaza or park is totally fathomable and safe, even for the youngest child. It will be urban enough in amenities offered, but secluded enough to avoid the distaste or wastes of city living. Every one then supports one another and the local businesses and vendors sprouting about them, creating a strong local economy and sustainable community. There will always be green spaces to live, affordable housing, entertainment, restaurants and jobs being continually created and offered stemming from the Kalu Yala concept.
It’s not just about promoting sustainable communities, or living. It’s about changing the way the world is and will be living…Kalu Yala style.
I came here originally doing Community Outreach because of a non-profit organization endeavor I’ve begun. I’ve gained very insightful information about community integration and relations, but I found I was already experienced in the community communication and coordination aspect part of it all, and perhaps became bored with it.
Fittingly enough, my degree in communications with concentration in advertising, and minor in marketing, I end up spending time with the Business program interns and feeling really inspired by a group of diverse beneficial like minded individuals that could move mountains with the ideas they conceive…and all they needed was a little inspiration.
And that inspiration is Kalu Yala.
Currently, we live in the Business headquarters office in an apartment next door to Casa Yala, the Kalu Yala downtown Panama City Guest House. It’s currently undergoing remodeling, and rebranding, being fitting with new paint, decor and some furnishings for the guest rooms. The open area rooms with hammocks and views of downtown Panama City and the Atlantic Ocean are already great spaces and in current use as a social center for promoting local and international art, artists, and performers… a place for like minds to connect and meet and mingle.
Kalu Yala is like alternative living- don’t become comfortable following the norms. Break the mold! Start the trend. Just because something is normal or widely accepted doesn’t mean it’s right, beneficial, or healthy. EMPOWERMENT! That’s totally what Kalu Yala is about! You have big plans? Make them happen. There’s nothing or no one person stopping you from changing the world but you. So what you gonna do?
The world is huge and there’s plenty out there waiting for you.
