The first two weeks in Panama have already flown by! Orientation week helped us learn a little more about Kalu Yala: it’s philosophy, history, and visions for the future. We read articles and held discussions on various aspects of sustainable living fundamentals and through this we were able to gain a little insight and inspiration for our projects. We also enjoyed several scavenger hunts around the city to help us get acquainted with our coordinates and give us a chance to get to know our fellow interns a bit better!
Second week and we were off to the valley! After a strenuous hike, the view and vibe were well worth it! So much green space, so many sounds, smells, and feelings evoked. From swimming in the Pacora River to chopping down bamboo stalks with a machete, I experienced many new things during my time in the valley. A truly amazing experience being able to have a visual of what’s to come with Kalu Yala.
I spent a few days in San Miguel as well. Experiencing a completely different culture other than my own was an amazing experience. In my head, I kept comparing my life and surroundings at home to theirs. Such an extreme difference that made me appreciate everything I have and excited for working with the people of San Miguel for the next few months.
For my project, I am planning and implementing an after school soccer program for the children at the school. I am excited to bring Outdoor Recreation in to their lives and provide a safe and fun after school activity for the kids! This week I am meeting with the principal and parents to get the ball rolling!
